How do I connect Gmail to my agent, and why doesn't it pick up some of my emails?

Connect Gmail with an App Password and learn which emails the agent's inbox check reads, skips and misses.

The Gmail integration lets an agent watch an inbox and act on requests sent by email, for example "post this" or a question for you. It connects over IMAP with a Google App Password, so your real password is never used and there's no Google sign-in.

Set it up

  1. Use a dedicated Gmail account for the agent rather than your personal inbox.

  2. In that Google account, open Security and make sure 2-Step Verification is on.

  3. Open App Passwords, enter a name such as "Wiro", click Create, and copy the 16-character password.

  4. On the agent's Gmail card, enter the Gmail address and the App Password, then click the card's Update button. Saving restarts a running agent for a short moment.

To give the agent work, forward or send an email to that address, for example a post request with a link or a topic.

How the inbox check works

  • A scheduled task checks the inbox every 30 minutes by default. You can change how often, or turn it off (see scheduled tasks).

  • It reads only unread mail in the Inbox, and marks each email it handles as read.

  • It skips automated mail: senders such as noreply@, no-reply@, notifications@ and mailer-daemon@, and subjects containing "unsubscribe", "newsletter", "receipt" or "invoice". Those are marked as read too.

  • Each check is an agent run, so it uses credits (see agent pricing).

Why an email was missed

  • It was opened before the check ran, by you or a mail app, so it was no longer unread.

  • It was archived, or a filter moved it out of the Inbox.

  • It looked automated (see the list above).

  • The check is turned off, or the agent was stopped or out of credits.

What the agent does with an email

The agent doesn't reply by email. It reports to you in the agent chat (and on Telegram, if connected) and waits for your instructions, or for your approval before it posts anything, unless you've told it to post automatically.

"Invalid credentials"

The App Password is wrong, or 2-Step Verification was turned off, which cancels all App Passwords. Turn 2-Step Verification back on, create a new App Password and save it on the card.
